Augie March have won the coveted Australian Music Prize for their hit album 'Moo, You Bloody Choir'.
The band, who hail from Melbourne, were awarded the prize at the Sydney ceremony last night. The winner is voted for by a panel of judges, including music industry experts, artists and retailers, with one judge being Take 40's own Andrew G!
The album was regarded as the most outstanding and creative Australian album that's been released here over the past year. Previously Augie March claimed the number one spot in Triple J's Hot 100 for their single 'One Crowded Hour', and received four nominations at last year's ARIA awards.
The boys say they never expected to win the award, or to have so much success with this third album. "With the Hottest 100 we thought it'd be good if we got into the top 30, that would have been better than we'd done before, so when we won was a shock," says front man Glenn Richards.
He also said that the band has tried to better themselves with each album. "I don't get it when acts try to get popular by listening to what's popular and trying to ace it. That's a surefire way to lose respect for yourself, and I have no intention of doing that any time soon."
Other acts short-listed for the award included Bob Evans, Sarah Blasko, Lisa Gerrard and The Drones.
For winning the prize, Augie March take home a cool $25,000.
