More proof of Blur's infinite horizons is provided by 'Think Tank', their seventh album and their first recorded as a three-piece. While defying the rumours that it would be either 1) their "dance" album or 2) their "world music" album, it is their grooviest so far, with an eclectic variety of rhythms and textures underpinning melodies to melt the heart and wobble the lower lip. The spirits of Can, Joe Strummer, Eno and Orchestra Baobab hover, but the result - though unexpectedly languid and sunny - is pure Blur.
Sessions for 'Think Tank' began in the band's London studio 13 late in 2001. Recording moved southwards when the band packed up the entire studio and migrated to Marrakech for September and October of last year, and finishing touches were added in Devon before Christmas. The final thirteen tracks were selected from more than twenty-five completed songs.
'Think Tank' is Blur's first album as a three piece founding guitarist Graham Coxon was present for the initial sessions and plays on one track, album closer 'Battery In Your Leg'. Produced by Blur and Ben Hillier with additional production by William Orbit and Norman Cook, 'Think Tank' is Blur at their most inventive: an eclectic variety of rhythms and textures, glorious melodies and their most direct set of songs since 'Parklife'.
After the release of Think Tank, the band took a break, but are rumoured to be back recording later in 2008.
