From the boxing ring to Broadway and from the Olympic Games to the Rathaus in Vienna, soprano Sarah Brightman has demonstrated in the course of her career a singular versatility in her approach to musical performance.
Once a member of the pop group Hot Gossip, she has since gone on, on the one hand, to appear in such hit musicals at Cats and Phantom of the Opera and, on the other, to perform with such notable artists as Placido Domingo, Helmut Lotti and Riccardo Cocciante. This autumn, on a multiformat release (CD, video, DVD), Brightman will appear in Christmas in Vienna V (SK/ST/SM 60244) on the Sony Classical label.
Brightman contributes new and unusual repertoire to Placido Domingo's annual event (filmed and recorded this time at the Rathaus in Vienna in December, 1997), including a duet version, with Domingo, of Trevor Horn and Hans Zimmer's "The Closing of the Year," and a solo performance of the BeeGees' "First of May." In addition, she participates in a closing medley that draws tunes from the traditions of Germany, Spain, France, and Wales and also from the pop repertoire, including Ian Anderson's "Another Christmas Song," Roger Whittaker's "Christmas Is Here Again," and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)."
Supporting Brightman on stage are the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen under the direction of Elisabeth Ziegler and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Steven Mercurio.
In addition to her appearance with Domingo, Helmut Lotti, Riccardo Cocciante and Mercurio in 1997, Miss Brightman appeared on international television in May, 1995, singing "Question of Honour" at the introduction of the World Championship title bout between Henry Maske and Graciano Rocchigiani. She recently concluded a highly successful tour of Germany.
