REVIEW - Kelly Clarkson Barefoot And Brilliant At Melbourne Concert!

20 April 2010

I went to check out Kelly Clarkson's concert at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne last night and let me tell you -- the woman can sing!

After opening support slots from local girl Cassie Davis and Rock and Roll hitmaker Eric Hutchinson, Clarkson opened the show with the powerful title track to her current album 'All I Ever Wanted'.

Kelly proved to us all why she was the winner of the very first American Idol with an absolutely flawless vocal performance from start to finish, even treating long time fans to her debut worldwide smash hit 'Miss Independent'.

But while her vocal was faultless, Clarkson's stage production and presentation left a bit to be desired. The stage was a plain and simple no frills band set up which was fine however it lacked video screens and props/special effects which would no doubt have added to the top quality of the performance.

Kelly makes no apologies for this either, joking with the crowd that she's a "tomboy" and pointing out the fact that she was barefoot for the entire concert and tied her hair in a pony tail early on because it was just too hot in there!

Highlights for Kelly fans included the crowd favourite 'Since You've Been Gone', and 'Behind These Hazel Eyes'. Kelly also showed us she's partial to a cover or ten, belting out a string of covers spattered through the show. First up it was Alanis Morissette's track 'That I Would Be Good', closely followed by Kings of Leon's 'Use Somebody', then later a Kylie tribute with 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head', 'Lies' by The Black Keys, Keith Urban's 'Tonight I Want To Cry' and The White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army' in the encore.

Following her latest Australian single 'Cry' poor Kelly suffered from a bit of what I like to call 'audience participation FAIL' when she attempted to split the crowd in repeating some lyrics to a relatively unknown song and about 20 people sang!

Kelly came back for a killer encore and rocked it out in her only wardrobe change of the night -- a black leather jacket thrown over her black tights and shift dress outfit -- closing the show with an energetic performance of 'My Life Would Suck Without You'.

Clarkson certainly knows how to put on an entertaining show -- but hopefully next time she'll add a bit of sparkle to the stage!
