Coldplay Strike Mercury

20 July 2005

Their latest album, "X & Y", went to number one in 22 countries when it was released in June, now Coldplay have been nominated for Britain's most prestigious musical award, the Mercury Prize.

Despite "X & Y" being the year’s highest selling album in England - 500,000 copies were snapped up in its first week - Coldplay aren't favourites to win.

Most bookies have tipped indie-rockers Kaiser Chiefs to take out the $50,000 prize, won last year by Franz Ferdinand.

The winner will be announced in September.
